More room to build sounds like good news. But when an AI announcement says “double usage,” the useful questions are: double what, for which plan, and for how long? We checked OpenAI’s own documentation to put the ChatGPT and Codex headlines in context.
THE VERIFIED PICTURE · OCTOBER 31, 2026
A real promotion. A date that matters.
The double-limit announcement we verified is dated February 2, 2026. It described a limited-time Codex promotion. That historical announcement alone does not establish a new doubling today. Read the dated announcement ↗
What did “double usage” refer to?
At the Codex app’s February launch, OpenAI announced temporarily higher rate limits for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. The increase covered Codex in the app, command line, IDE and cloud. It was not a blanket promise that every ChatGPT feature would permanently get twice the allowance. Source: OpenAI changelog.
A screenshot without its date can turn an old offer into apparent breaking news. Before making a purchase around one, find the original announcement and compare it with the terms shown inside your account.
What the current usage docs say
As checked on October 31, OpenAI’s pricing documentation says Pro currently has no five-hour limit, while weekly limits may still apply. ChatGPT Work and Codex share usage. The amount a task consumes depends on factors including model choice, context and complexity; a message is not a fixed unit of work. OpenAI directs users to their usage dashboard for current limits and reset times. Source: current usage guidance.
For planning a project, the practical question is how much reviewed work you can finish within your allowance. Count useful outcomes: a repaired form, a tested report, a clearer customer journey. Sending more prompts is not itself a business result.
API credits are a separate benefit
OpenAI also documents API credits for eligible paid Pro and Business subscribers. These credits support applications built with the OpenAI API; they do not increase ChatGPT or signed-in Codex limits. Eligibility includes a paid subscription at least seven days old, ownership of the receiving API organization, and matching account email addresses. Amounts and expiration rules depend on the subscription. Source: API credit benefit and eligibility.

For a business owner, this distinction matters at the design stage. Asking an assistant to help you build a website and adding AI inside that website are different projects. The second also needs decisions about customer data, error handling, ongoing operating costs and who reviews the output.
Where the opportunity gets interesting
Our view: additional capacity is most valuable when a business already knows which repetitive job it wants to improve. Start with a narrow workflow and a clear definition of success.
- Choose one problem you can describe.
For example, turn a messy service-inquiry process into a structured form, an owner dashboard and a visible follow-up status.
- Build a small version you can inspect.
Use sample records. Test missing fields, duplicate requests and failed notifications. Make sure the owner can tell what happened.
- Measure the whole job.
Include review, corrections and maintenance when comparing the effort with your current process. A fast first draft is only one part of delivery.
- Expand when the result earns it.
Keep a human responsible for customer-facing changes. Add features after the small workflow proves useful in everyday work.
More capacity creates room to experiment. A clear workflow turns that room into useful software.
The Data Architect · Our perspective
Before you upgrade, check these four things
- The date: is this a current offer or an older announcement?
- The product: does it concern ChatGPT, Codex or the API?
- Your account: what does your own plan and usage screen show?
- The outcome: which specific task would more capacity help you finish?
We have not verified a new across-the-board doubling announced today. The useful takeaway is to match the documented benefit to the work you actually want to do, then budget for building, checking and maintaining it.
